Dr. Lapegna wins LASA Honorable Mention Award! Congratulations to Dr. Pablo Lapegna, co-author of an article that won the Honorable Mention Award for "Best Article" from the Latin American Studies Association's Environment Awards. LASA is the largest and most prestigious association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The Environment Section works towards a fuller understanding of the dynamics of the environment and its interaction with human society, seeking to promote an awareness of environmental issues and to introduce those concerns into the policy-making processes in the Hemisphere. Department Head and Franklin Professor of Sociology, William Pridemore, is co-author on a newly published article in Justice Quarterly, one of two flagship journals in the field of criminology. The study examined how (1) the legitimacy citizens’ grant to their governments and (2) remittances, which is when foreign workers send money home to their families or others close to them, affect violence rates in Latin American nations.
