Will the course i took at another school count toward my sociology major/minor? Courses taken at other colleges and universities will count toward a sociology major or minor if they are equivalent to a course we offer in terms of content, level, and credit hours. If you would like to request credit for a particular course, please e-mail Kathy Lou (klou@uga.edu) and provide a link to the course syllabus (or bring copy of the syllabus to 113B Baldwin). Courses that are not equivalent may still count toward your general electives even though they will not help satisfy the major or minor requirements. When should majors sign up for an advising appointment? Advising appointments are distributed within seniority groups on a first-come first-served basis, and because you need to be advised before you can register for classes, signing up for an early appointment increases the chances that you will get seats in the classes you want. The closer you are to graduation, the earlier you are allowed to sign up for an advising appointment. Majors graduating after one more semester can typically sign up for an advising appointment in the second week of the semester. Majors graduating in two semesters are eligible to sign up next, etc. The earlier in the semester that you sign up for an appointment, the better. (Sociology minors should be advised in their major department). When can I register for classes? You will be cleared for registration after you have attended an advising appointment. Athena, however, may not actually allow you to register until the appointed time on your registration ticked emailed to you from the Registrar’s Office. The more credit hours you have earned, the earlier Athena will allow you to register. Always check your Student Records to see if you have any holds before registration begins or it will prevent you from registration. For more information about the registration dates, please visit the Registrar’s Website. How do i get the Permission of Department (POD) for a class? Permission of Department (POD) is given to sociology majors during advising appointments. Priority is given in the same order we advise students: students graduating in one more term will get first priority; students graduating in two terms will get POD next, etc. (POD will be given to minors after we have finished advising majors--usually in the week before finals.) I'm graduating next semester. Is there anything i need to do to prepare for graduation? Make sure to visit Baldwin 113B for an advising appointment. Also, please contact Morgan Mahaffey (morganmahaffey@uga.edu) in the Arts & Sciences Dean's Office for a graduation check.
