Leading scholars visit UGA

We recently welcomed 2 distinguished scholars to Baldwin Hall.

Dr. David Garland (NYU) presented insights from his newly publish book "Law and Order Leviathan: A Theory of America’s Extraordinary Penal State”. His lecture traced the structural sources of America’s extraordinary penal state and the community-level processes through which they impact crime and policing. Dr. Garland argues that America’s carceral regime will remain an international outlier until America’s political economy is structurally transformed.

Dr. Lauren Clingan (Science Po) presented “Paychecks and Power Plays: How Households Define Women’s Wages,” drawing on her research with men and women living and working in the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Clingan's research and teaching center on the intersections of gender, work, family, and money, with a particular focus on how these dynamics shape and are shaped by social policy and economic inequality.

We appreciate both of them sharing their knowledge and expertise with our students and look forward to welcoming more guests in Spring 2026.
